28/01/2014: Chinese New Year

Chinese style painting
The sun was shining brightly this morning as we started our latest meeting in Okeford Fitzpaine. We were a little light on the toy front but had lots of other activities to enjoy.

Chinese style painting was a big hit with lots of black and red creations using brushes to make long and short flowing strokes across the paper.

Goldfish mini kite
Another fun craft for small hands was creating goldfish mini kites. These are attached by string to a stick that the children could hold allowing them to run around the hall with the fish flying behind.

In honour of the year of the horse we also had some paper craft horses to cut out and glue together.

Preparing vegetables
Whilst the younger members were crafting away the two eldest helped to prepare some Chinese/Taiwanese food that was shared at the end of the meeting.

Having a go with chopsticks
Science experiment
We also had a simple hands on science experiment using water, vegetable oil and food colouring. It involved measuring volume, weight, considering density, observation and then recording results. A pdf of the instructions can be found here. Just remember that less is more when it comes to adding the food colouring. Don't these jars look pretty?

It was a fun week and I'm looking forward to the next session on the 11th February. With Valentines day on the horizon the activities are likely to influenced by this. Early plans include baking and papercraft but if you have any ideas or would like to run an activity do let us know.
