15/07/2014 Butterflies and rockets

Armed with our print outs courtesy of the big butterfly count  we explored the long grass area in the local churchyard and managed to identify a White butterfly, a Ringlet, a Speckled Wood and a Red Admiral before we scared them all away. There were also a number of smaller brown butterflies darting around that refused to settle so we couldn't identify which they were.

Using the water rocket

Onto the park. I settled us in the very centre to have fun with the water rocket. This was 1/4 filled with water then attached to a bicycle pump to add lots of air. The rocket launches when the correct air pressure is reached. It goes incredibly high!

Where's it gone?

I kept trying to take a photo but the release was too quick for me, the best I have is this one above where you can just about see a trickle of water. Below is a dodgy video taken on my camera  that gives a better idea of how it works (sorry for the low picture quality and camera shake).

And next time...
22/07/2014 I've always wanted to make a geodesic dome out of newspaper, I think that it's finally time to try. Emma has more cooking in store for the older children, this week it is apple tarts. Please bring half a dozen apples, a flan dish (anything with sides) and £1 towards other ingredients if your child would like to take part. Under 10's may join in but we require their parents to directly supervise.
