17/06/2014: Coke and Mentos

Our last session was a hot one. After half an hour of creating Hero Factory characters we were all ready to head off to the park to have a play with diet coke and mentos. What were the results of our experimentation? We found out that it was a great way to have a lot of fun!

In all cases we dropped 4 mentos into open bottles of fizz. We tried fizzy water (bubbled over just a little), ordinary supermarket cola (a much stronger reaction) and several different types of diet cola (produced a nice high geyser, very little difference between the brands with possibly the caffeine free one being smaller).  Our experiment wasn't quite as controlled as it could have been but all the children enjoyed having a couple of goes. They also discovered that after the eruption the coke was completely flat but that the mentos could still be rescued and consumed.

My camera is now officially lost but Laura has saved the day with a great set of images that she has shared on the North Dorset Home Education Group Facebook page.

Here is the video, again, showing the MythBusters explaining the theory of how nucleation may be causing the effect:

And next time...
25/06/2014 Back at the hall this week. Lots of sensory play exploring textures with different types of dough (please wear old clothes or bring an apron). We will be making rainmakers and also attempt to create a cloud in a bottle. The investigation table will be out again but this time will include a few different noise/sound makers as well as the usual manipulatives. It's promising to be a fun, hands on session.
